Bird depictions and their behaviors have been present in African culture and African art since prehistoric times. Birds are represented in early cave paintings along with other prominent animals. Later, birds came to be used in religious or symbolic African art and design; among the most magnificent of these was the Peacock Throne of the Persian emperors of India. Birds are thought to be good messengers and very loyal companions.
