Chameleons are widely regarded with unreasoning fear, especially in West Africa, where various beliefs associate the reptile with the Sun. In native cultures, the chameleons are said to fetch fire from the sun. A rare gift was also granted to the species as some chameleons are able to change their skin color, which has made them most famous. Changing color is an expression of the physical and physiological condition of the lizard. The color also plays an important part in communication. The symbolism surrounding the lizard represents divine wisdom and good fortune-to be bestowed a lizard is a great honor.
